What happened

OpenAI introduced the Agents API in public beta as a managed foundation for agents that work across longer sessions, use tools, run in a separate computing space and save their progress.

Developers can choose an OpenAI-hosted environment, their own infrastructure or supported sandbox providers. The API also supports optional helper agents that can each handle a different part of a job.

What it costs and what people still decide

OpenAI says there is no separate fee for the Agents API itself, but AI processing, tools and cloud computing are still billed under their applicable rates.

The service supplies infrastructure. The organisation using it still decides what data the agent can access, which tools it may call, what requires approval and how results are checked.

A safe first project

  • Choose a small internal task you can undo, with a clear result.
  • Give the agent the smallest set of files and tools it needs.
  • Require sources, changed files, costs and unresolved questions in the result.
  • Keep sending, publishing, purchasing and account changes behind human approval.
