Let Claude connect to your documents, tools and inbox
Section titled “Let Claude connect to your documents, tools and inbox”Claude can do more than answer questions in a blank chat. You can link your cloud storage (such as Google Drive), connect external tools using the open Model Context Protocol (MCP), and organize overwhelming email chains into clear action lists.
What you need
Section titled “What you need”- A Claude account on claude.ai or the Claude Desktop app.
- A Google Drive account if you want to reference cloud documents.
- An email thread or work update you need to organize.
1. Connect Google Drive
Section titled “1. Connect Google Drive”When you link your Google Drive, you can bring spreadsheets, Google Docs, and research PDFs directly into your conversation:
- In the prompt box, click the + (plus) or paperclip icon.
- Select Add from Google Drive.
- Authorize Claude to access the specific files you select.
- Once attached, ask Claude to analyze the file:
Review this uploaded document.Summarize the 3 key action items and any deadlines mentioned.Flag anything that is unclear with "To confirm".2. Connect external tools with MCP (Model Context Protocol)
Section titled “2. Connect external tools with MCP (Model Context Protocol)”Claude supports Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard created by Anthropic that lets Claude connect securely to:
- Email & Calendar: Search and draft replies in Gmail or Microsoft Outlook.
- Team Workspaces: Read and post updates in Slack or Notion.
- Databases & Code: Query SQLite or PostgreSQL databases and browse GitHub repositories.
In the Claude Desktop app or enterprise setup, you can add an MCP server for your service. Claude only accesses the tools you explicitly configure and approve.
3. Triage and draft complex email replies
Section titled “3. Triage and draft complex email replies”When you receive long, confusing client or office email chains, paste the thread into Claude to extract the facts:
Read this email chain and help me respond professionally:1. SUMMARY: What is the core problem or request?2. DEADLINE: What date or time is expected?3. DRAFT REPLY: Write a 3-sentence polite reply in professional English confirming our timeline.
EMAIL:[paste email thread here]Example situation
Section titled “Example situation”A client sends a long, slightly frustrated email about a delayed project revision. Claude extracts:
Summary: The client needs updated brochure dimensions before printing begins on Monday.
Deadline: Friday, 5:00 PM.
Draft Reply: “Hi [Client Name], thank you for flagging this. I have received the updated brochure specifications and will send the final print-ready files to you by Friday at 3:00 PM. Best regards, [Your Name]”
Before you connect your tools
Section titled “Before you connect your tools”- Respect workplace policies: Never connect company email accounts or internal Google Drives without authorization from your employer or IT administrator.
- Never upload confidential records: Keep bank statements, customer databases, passwords, and OTPs out of AI chats.
- Always review before sending: AI drafts are suggestions. Always double-check names, amounts, and dates yourself.
